NFPA 1051 Wildland Fire Fighter Level I (2016 Edition)

The NFPA 1051 Wildland Fire Fighter Level I (2016 Edition) Certification Program is currently available.

As there is no IFSTA/J&B textbook in print for this training season, the following materials should be used to deliver training and will be covered in the certification exam:

• S215 Fire Operations in the Wildland/Urban Interface
• S100-G Grassland Wildfire Operations
• IFSTA Essentials pages 270-280, 825-830, 872-873 (PPE and tools maintenance)

PDFs of the S215 and S100-G textbooks will be provided to training hosts upon request. Note that some of the content covered in these texts is beyond the scope of NFPA 1051 Wildland Fire Fighter Level I. See the Instructor Package for a program outline and further information.

As there is no IFSTA/J&B textbook, instructors will be responsible for developing support materials such as instructional aids, lesson plans, and formative assessments. If unable to develop their own materials, training hosts can arrange to take the course through an approved fire training school such as Lakeland College, Emergency Services Academy or NorQuest College.

Revision and further development of NFPA 1051 resources has tentatively been scheduled for Winter 2018/19.

Future Development

The Office of the Fire Commissioner is currently overseeing the development of training programs for wildland urban interface structural protection units (WUI-SPU). In December 2018, the S215 Fire Operations in the Wildland/Urban Interface course will be transferred from the Hinton Training Centre to the Office of the Fire Commissioner. At that time, there will be an alignment of the NFPA 1051, S215, WUI-SPU and Forestry programs.
